New Zealand High Country Experience Omahau Downs, the High Country experience one kilometer from Twizel township, offers a variety of accommodation including bed and breakfast and farmstay.
There is something for everyone with a number of new Mountain bike and walking tracks on new land access obtained by DOC. With a new Farm theme mini golf in town, the Heli Bike mountaine biking including 2-3 great new cafes, Twizel has something for everyone.
Part of an historic high country sheep station in the celebrated Mackenzie Basin, Omahau Downs offers a unique country atmosphere, access to a number of activities, views of Mount Cook and surrounds and unique fauna.
The braided waterways, swamps, gravel beds, and tributary streams of Omahau are important habitats for a number of New Zealand birds including the black and pied stilts, (http://www.doc.govt.nz) banded dotterel, South Island pied oystercatcher, New Zealand shoveler, and New Zealand scaup. On the hills, the New Zealand falcon and Australasian harrier are common, while the Twizel river running through the property is a popular fishing haven.
Aoraki Mount Cook is Australasia’s highest mountain and has the longest glacier in the Southern Hemisphere - the Tasman Glacier. There is also the Ed Hillary Centre Mt Cook with it digital planiterium and 3D theatre, great for wet days.
Mount Cook National Park, a world heritage listed site covers over 7,000 hectares of breathtaking alpine scenery, preserved in it’s natural state for visitors to enjoy.

Flight seeing tours are available from Tekapo, Twizel and Glentanner Park in a choice of helicopter or fixed wing plane.
A 45min drive from Twizel, Tekapo lies on the shore of the turquoise blue Lake Tekapo while the Tekapo River supports a high number of takeable fish and is arguably the best Central South Island. Visit the Alpine Springs and Spa in Tekapo including the Omarama Hot tubs. There is also the Mount John Observatory which is worth a visit including the new and Cafe.
